Faith is one of those words that gets used so often in church that it can start to lose its weight. We say “ it’ll be fine” - as something to fill the silence when we don't know what to say. 

But the bible treated faith as something far more specific than a feeling or a general attitude. It’s described as substance, evidence, action. Something that moves mountains. Something that kept people going through circumstances that would break most of us today.

What The Bible Says About Faith 

Before the list, one verse that defines everything else 

 

That’s the clearest definition of faith in the entire Bible. Not a feeling. Not optimism. Substance. Evidence. Faith is described here as something real - as real as the things you can touch - even though it exists before those things are visible 

Everything else in the list flows from that foundation.

Bible Verse About Faith in Hard Times 

These are verses people reach for things when fall apart. When the prayer doesn’t seem to be getting through. When you’re running out of reason to keep believing. 

“And we know that in all things God world for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

One of the most quoted verses in the Bible - and one of the most misunderstood. It doesn’t say everything that happens is good. It says God works through everything. That’s a different claim, and a harder one to hold onto

“consider it pure joy, my brother and sisters, whenever you face trails of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

James doesn't pretend the trail isn’t painful. He says consider the bigger picture - what’s being produced through it. 

“But those who hope on the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.” 

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever - present help in trouble.”

Short. Direct. No conditions attached. 

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”

Paul wrote this while he was in prison. It's worth remembering when you read the word “momentary".

“The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus doesn’t promise an easy life here. He promises something better - that the outcome is already settled.

Scriptures About Trusting God 

There’s a difference between believing God exists and actually trusting him with the  things that matter to you. These verses speak to the second, harder kind of faith. 

 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your path straight.”

Probably the most memorized scripture about faith and trust in the Bible. The phrase “lean not on your own understanding” is the part most people skip over. 

“commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this.”

“you will keep in perfect peace whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

Peace as a byproduct of trust - not the other way around. 

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose Confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.” 

“Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.”

“commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”

“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Faith Bible Verses For When You're Afraid 

Fear and faith aren’t opposites. You can be afraid and still have faith-the Bible makes that clear throughout. These verses aren’t about eliminating fear. They're about what to do with it. 

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

“when I am honest, Prayers in the Psalms.”

“do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”

“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”

“The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid?” 

“so don’t be afraid; you are with more than many sparrows.” 

“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adaptation to sonship.”

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

New Testament Verses on Faith

The New Testament doesn’t just talk about faith-it shows what it looks like in actions. In healings, in conversions, in arguments, in letters written from prison. These are the verses that shaped the early Church.

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

The mustard seed gets quoted a lot. Less often noted: Jesus is saying the size of the faith isn’t the point. Even the smallest real faith changes things. 

“If you can’? Said Jesus. ‘Everything is possible for the one who believes.”

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.”

“consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”

Faith isn’t manufactured through effort. It comes through hearing. It's worth thinking about what you’re listening to. 

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

“For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed-a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith.”

“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in Prayer.”

“in the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

James pushes back on passive faith harder than almost any other New Testament writer, Faith that doesn’t change how you live isn’t really faith-it’s just agreement. 

“These have come so that the proverb genuineness of your faith-of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.”

Old Testament faith Scriptures 

Long before the New Testament, people were trusting God through impossibly difficult circumstances-exile, persecution, famine, grief. These verses come from that tradition.

“see, the enemy is puffed up; his desires are not upright-but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness.”

The verse Paul quotes in Romans 1:17. Its roots go deep.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

Written in the middle of devastation. That context matters.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” 

“Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.”

Abraham hadn’t seen the promise fulfilled yet. He just believed. That simple act is held up as the model of faith throughout the entire New Testament 

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil for you are with me ; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil”

“Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you,”

“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

Short Faith Bible Quotes to Memories 

Some verses are short enough to carry with you. These are the ones worth memorizing-not just reading. 

“Now faith is the substance of the things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” 

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.”

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength,”

Often taken out of context- Paul wrote this while describing how he had learned to be content whether hungry or full. The “all things” is contentment, not achievement. 

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

The most quoted verse in the Bible. Worth reading slowly rather than past it.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

How to Use These Verses in Your Life

A list of 50 verses isn't very useful if you just read through it once and move on. Here are a few ways to actually get something from them:

  • Pick one verse a week. Not fifty. One. Write it on a card, put it somewhere you'll see it, and think about it through the week. The goal is depth, not coverage.

  • Read the context. Every verse in this list comes from a chapter, which comes from a book, which was written to specific people in specific circumstances. When a verse hits differently, go read the whole chapter. It almost always adds something.

  • Use them when you're struggling, not just when you're fine. These aren't decorative. They were written for people in hard situations. A verse about trusting God means more when you actually need to trust God with something specific.

  • Pray them back. Take a verse like Psalm 56:3 - "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you" - and say it as a prayer. Make it yours. That's how these words have been used for thousands of years.
